Personality:
When it comes down to brass tacks, Rena Ryugu is a simple girl with simple desires. She has no need for riches or fame; her only wish is to live happily in Hinamizawa with her friends and father. The type of girl that can take pleasure in even the most mundane events in life, Rena finds beauty in even the ugliest objects. She insists trash heaps are piles of treasure and her home is a haven for anything she finds “cyute” - which can range from your run-of-the-mill stuffed animal to damaged statues and old appliances. She's perfectly at home navigating heaps of garbage, believing that anything and everything can be adorable if she puts her mind to it. Broken and abandoned items can find a home once again with Rena, who feels deep love and pity for objects forsaken by their masters.

Gentle and kindhearted, she easily assumes the role of a sisterly or maternal figure to many. Something about her naturally soothes and comforts, and Rena is almost always one of the first to provide moral and emotional support to her friends in their hour of need. Even in Hinamizawa's darkest hours, Rena can often be found nearby with a kind smile and a shoulder to cry on for whoever needs it. This isn't saved just for her friends, either; she reaches out and connects with anyone she thinks will need her, and takes genuine pleasure in providing relief for friends and strangers alike – for example, despite knowing Keiichi for less than a month, she's quick to befriend him and help him to adjust to life in the country. Keiichi even names her as one of the prime reasons he has been able to relax and enjoy Hinamizawa, despite living in the city for all his life. She loves taking care of people and seeing them benefit from her help, so much that in the end she's even named as the “mother” of the school. Rena often loses at Mion’s games as a result of her gentle nature, because despite the club rule of “do whatever it takes to win”, she often tries to incorporate morals and humanity in her strategy, unlike the more ruthless members of the club. However, when and if she becomes serious, Rena can just as easily transform into an unstoppable force of determination, displaying wit and cunning that she had previously been reluctant to unleash on her friends.

A key defining feature of Rena is her overbearing love for anything she finds cute or adorable. The girl is obsessed with cute things, promptly squealing and becoming excited and uncontrollable when she finds something she likes. It doesn't take much to get her panting and exclaiming how she wants to "take it home" and her so-called "Cyute Mode" has to be seen to be believed. The sight of adorable objects seems to make her inhumanly fast and strong (how much of this is anime exaggeration is up in the air), and Rena will use any means necessary to retrieve the cute object or person and make it hers. When triggered in club games, it makes her nigh-unstoppable.

Honestly, Rena gives off the impression as being a bit of an airhead, but the reality couldn't be further from the truth. Her strange habits and excitable nature masks genuine intelligence and unexpected maturity from a 15-year-old girl. Occasionally her friends will see the true Rena underneath the blushing face and confusion – that of a highly perceptive, intelligent, and mature young lady. She can easily look past a person's words and understand how they really feel, sometimes before they even understand themselves. This ability often helps her step in and defuse tense situations, and she's tactful and understanding enough that people immediately feel at ease when speaking to her about their problems. She quickly determines Shion's feelings for Satoshi and dislike of Satoko within minutes of meeting her. Later on, she even figures out later on that Shion was behind the murders of Rika and Satoko, just by searching their house and putting together a set of seemingly unrelated clues that most people would overlook. When we are treated to the inner workings of her mind at last, her thought processes are often on the level of a sad sort of philosophic. Furthermore, she's savvy enough to use her reputation to her advantage. Rena can cover up her true intentions with a smile and a squeal over finding something adorable, when in reality she has a much more serious goal in mind.

This is, however, only one side of Rena. There is a darkness under the surface, hidden under a smile and a layer of very thin skin. Squeals and silly gestures are calculated in advance; she's determined to be happy and be seen as happy, to the point where she purposely separates herself into two people. There is Rena, the side of her that’s always happy, always free of worry, always living for the moment and nothing more – and Reina, the side of her that despairs and curses her life’s misfortunes.

In reality, Rena is a very negative person. She's a girl that forcibly injects cheer and kindness in the world to cover up her own pessimism and self-loathing, and the mask cracks a little more with each passing day. Her happiness when in the company of her friends is genuine, but it doesn't change the fact that she suffers from severe depression. After moving from Hinamizawa to Ibaraki when she was very young, Rena's life has been full of tragedy, and she views her circumstances as divine punishment from Oyashiro-sama for daring to leave the village. Her parents' divorce and the collapse of her family has given Rena a terrible self-image; she puts the blame entirely on herself, thinking it was her responsibility to drive her mother and her mother’s lover apart. Of course, anyone with sense wouldn't blame a young girl for the mistakes of her parents, but that's just the way Rena is – self-sacrificial to a fault. She constantly puts the feelings of others above her own, taking on burdens and worries with a smile while keeping her own sadness locked away inside her. Getting Rena to talk about her problems is like pulling teeth, and she will deny, deny, deny any unhappiness of her own until her struggles finally reach a boiling point and explode. This is not said lightly, either; Rena was so determined to keep her troubles to herself that, in one timeline, she eventually reached a breaking point and murdered two criminals trying to extort money from her father.

You can't talk about Rena without mentioning Oyashiro-sama. Known as the guardian deity of Hinamizawa, Rena sees Oyashiro-sama as her tormentor and her savior in equal measure. Rena wholeheartedly believes in the existence of Oyashiro-sama as a result of seeing herself as “cursed” for leaving Hinamizawa. She remains convinced that when she was at her worst (hospitalized and self-harming), Oyashiro-sama appeared to her, urging her to return to Hinamizawa if she wanted the unfortunate events in her life to cease. This belief was only solidified after her circumstances improved upon returning to the village, and the intense feelings she has regarding the deity remain. Unsurprisingly, she is adamant that the villagers must remain in Hinamizawa at all costs, or become cursed as she once was. When the subject of Oyashiro-sama is brought up, Rena's mood changes considerably; she becomes extremely serious – even frightening - and will under no circumstances tolerate disrespect or denial of its existence. She is, however, sympathetic and understanding to those who are believed to be touched by the curse. She became a confidant of sorts for Satoshi shortly before he disappeared, and reached out repeatedly to Keiichi as he was succumbing to Hinamizawa Syndrome (though this caused him to see her as hostile and threatening).

Everyone in the villages suffers from a disease known as Hinamizawa Syndrome, which can cause violent and often fatal effects for those exposed to high-stress situations. It is implied, however, that Rena's suffering goes beyond the effects of the disease. Even after returning to Hinamizawa and finding peace in her life, Rena is still extremely unhappy and unstable. It is this part of her, in fact, that makes her so aggressively joyous and excitable when playing with her friends. Small pleasures can only truly be felt if one is already entrenched in cold despair, and Rena's life has been an arctic wasteland for far too long. She is fully aware of this, even believes that a person's happy days have a limit and one day they will come to an end – therefore, she feels she should strive to make every second count, for you never know if tomorrow your life will come crashing down.

This doesn't mean she'll accept her fate lying down, of course. Rena has seen enough tragedy in her life to be fiercely protective of her home and family. While kind to friends and strangers alike, people she perceives as threatening her or her loved ones' happiness are immediately delegated to the “enemy” category in Rena's mind. To her, they are nothing more than weeds that must be pulled, and Rena has no qualms about taking whatever steps she needs to in order to ensure they stay away. If needed, she will kill to protect her home and happiness, and even does so at one point. Rena believes it to be her solemn duty to protect her happiness after the misery she has endured; the efforts put into that are above criticism and need no justification. Her odd affection for filling her home with items from the trash may even be a side-effect of this, in an attempt to ward off strangers with her peculiar taste in decoration. Former loved ones are not exempt from this either; Rena harbors a distinct hatred for her mother due to her part in splitting up the family, going so far to smash her things and refuse to meet with her again. As warm as Rena is, her anger is equally intense, and forgiveness is not in her vocabulary if someone causes harm to those she cares about.

Of all the complex characters in Higurashi, Rena may be one of the most dynamic and relatable. She is the face of the franchise for a reason; just like the series, her life strikes a hard balance between hope and despair, joy and tragedy. Falling to her lowest only brings out a fierce determination to break the wheels of fate, backed by an iron will that rivals any storybook hero. But really, she has no interest in all of that. All she wants from life is the feeling of her smile becoming more genuine as she passes each day in happiness with her friends.
